2009! #40-#36

24 Dec

And we continue….

40 Echo and the Bunnymen – Life of a Thousand Crimes

Upon listening to this song, you can tell that this band was formed in the early 80s. They sound like the kind of band that you may have listened to a bit back in their day and then completely forgotten about. However, this song is somehow extremely addictive and catchy and could put anyone in a great mood instantly. The back beat is a simple mix of guitar and drum and along with Mac’s soft vocals, it makes this song simply irresistable after a few listens. But do give it a few listens. You make think it average after the first listen, but stick to it and it will grow on you in a big way until it becomes your number one good mood setter.

39 NERD feat. Santigold – Soldier

In my opinion, My Drivethru was one of the best tracks of 2008, so when I saw that Santi was teaming up with Pharell again, I was super excited. Soldier isn’t quite as good, but is still up there as far as mainstream goes. It has elements of hip hop, rock, punk, trip hop and even a bit of funk to create and a track supercharged with both energy and cool. I’ve always thought that NERD were great, and although I’m not into rap/rnb, Pharell Williams never fails to impress me. But it’s great to see them team up with a female vocalist. Santi really brings another element of cool to the mix.

38 My Gold Mask – Violet Eyes

My Gold Mask is one of my favourite new bands of the year. There is something really addictive about Gretta’s voice, it’s somewhere between grunge and indie with a lot of cool. One of the great things about Violet Eyes is the mixture of staple and novelty instruments that sets it a part from all the other tracks of its genre. However, it really is the vocals that makes the song. They’re so unique and whilst they may seem almost screechy in parts, they will hook you into listening. I’m so glad that Gretta and Jack have finally released their EP so that now we have more of them to listen to get our fix!

37 The Crystal Method ft. Emily Haines – Come Back Clean

America’s Crystal Castles teamed up with Emily Haines (aka Metric) to make this ultra cool indie track. Other than having quite interesting lyrics about a violent drug fuelled boyfriend (possibly), it the song goes through several stages of music style. It goes from a breaks intro, to an electronica and indie body and then back to breaks again, making for appealing progression and a very dancable track. Off the 2009 album, Divided By The Night, there are also a lot of nice remixes out there for this song, that of Kaskade being the best I’ve heard so far.

36 Royksopp – Happy Up Here

The Norwegian duo, Royksopp, had pretty big standards to live up to when they released their latest album, Junior. Skimming down the list of collaborations, including Robyn, Lykke Li, Anneli Drecker from the 2006 album and Karin Dreijer-Andersson from the Knife, you expect even more. Happy Up Here does not in any way let you down. It’s playful, buoyant, relaxing and great to dance to and really just makes a cute  summer anthem. The videoclip, featuring a giant game of space invaders, is also worth a look, and be sure to check out the Boys Noize remix.
